overused phrase "the chosen people" means. What role does being "the chosen people" play in Jewish Theology? Primarily, Jewish faith teaches that the election of its people as "the chosen
people" has inscribed them with a mission and that Jews live because this is so. However, the concept of being chosen in this context is in no way related to
any kind of "superiority," either socially, economically, or politically as has often been believed. Obviously there are all types of "chosen people" around us that are envied by all. There
are those in the international "jet set," with their money and power, there are the strong and powerful "men" who sit on the boards of our giant corporations, and there
our politicians and leaders who exert enormous power and influence. These people, chosen by birth, circumstance or luck to be among the elite, have historically fought to keep the Jews
from being among them. Then where is the "chosen" aspect of the Jews? Is it only in their minds? That would make them
no different than the groups outlined above. According to Jewish theology it is the Holy Bible that so describes the Jews. The quotations about this run into the thousands. The
theme dominates the Scripture. There are several verses from the book which most of the Western world believes in one form or another as the oracles of God.
The first mention of the Jews as the "chosen people" occurs in Genesis 12: "God said to Abram, Go from your country, your birthplace, your
fathers house, to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation and in you shall all families of the earth be blessed"
