founder and the first president of the American Association of University Professors, an organizer of the New School for Social Research in New York and an officer of the American
Civil Liberties Union (Foner; Garraty PG). Throughout his long and distinguished career, as indicated by these positions, Dewey was active in both scholarly and public concerns. Dewey was once described
as the "most profound, most complete expression of American genius" (Foner; Garraty PG). Egalitarian Liberalism and Progress The egalitarian liberalism of Dewey
was devoted to the concept of progress and emphasized self-development and autonomy of the individual (Berkowitz 133). This is why many admirers of Dewey feel that his philosophy is just
as timely today as it was one hundreds ago. The attraction of Deweys pragmatism to todays intellectuals is that is appears to offer a "simple and decisive affirmation" of the
spirit of democracy that is based on what is "plainly revealed in experience" (Berkowitz 134). On one hand, Deweys name is coupled?particularly by his detractors?with an abandonment of standards
within US classrooms in favor of a focus on growth and self-fulfillment (Berkowitz 133). These detractors felt that Dewey proposed a "gentle moral relativism under the cover of the philosophical
