there has been a cross over between the two styles and that they may be seen as complimentary rather than competing. Western style management may be seen as staring with the idea of Frederick Winslow Taylor and his ideas on efficiency, these were based on the idea of economic man, where motivation was deemed to be principally the payment given for the performance of the job. Jobs were designed to be undertaken in the most efficient manner consisting of the division of jobs into component parts with each task performed by a different member of staff. This made staff easy to train, performing only a single small task, and easy to replace. The process was to increase productivity. Initially this caused a great deal of discontent and resulted in a low trust environment requiring high levels of supervision (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003). This was a process, that despite Taylor stating that there would need to be a hearty air of co-operation, was one that resulted in the deskilling and de-motivation of staff. This was a flawed method of production and other looked at this in the west and considered the process and the motivation of man in order to manage them more effectively. Mayo undertook the Hawthorne studies, here a group of workers were separated and given special treatment when they were studied, when provided with improved working condition their productivity improved, however, there was also an improvement when the conditions were worsened. This indicated that the employment relationship was important and the way the employees were managed would have an impact, if they felt important and valued and according to theorists such as Hergtzberg and Maslow, if their other social needs were met, they would be more productive (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003).
