Therefore, it is inherent that healthcare professionals should be aware of how advancements in IT affect them as the facilitators of IT applications development (Raghupathi, 2003). IT applications and systems "capture, organize, store, rationalize and present health information," while also providing integration with "existing and emerging technology" (Raghupathi, 2003, p. 10). The main goal of IT utilized in healthcare is to use the "various forms of IT in a strategic and intelligent manner for supporting effective health-related decision making" (Raghupathi, 2003, p. 10). Information technology (IT) is a very complicated subject, as is healthcare. Therefore, when one combines these two complex subjects into one, i.e., healthcare information systems, it creates "irreconcilable differences that are so complicated as to defy resolution" (Davidson, 203, p. 3). Nevertheless, IT can and must be understood by healthcare professionals and the following research paper is designed to aid in achieving this goal, as IT is a valuable tool that aids healthcare professionals in ascertaining the data that they need to make decisions and provide quality care. This is followed by a overview of the four major informatics theories and a discussion of the Data, Information and Knowledge (DIK) model. This is followed by an overview of the technology for patient and client management. The last section before the conclusion is an analysis of the impact of technology on healthcare and health status.
