Giltman 9/2010 Please Beginning in the mid 19th century, major changes began taking place in regards to output. Workers were no longer relying on manual labor to tend their farms but instead began using heavy machinery for agriculture, mining, manufacturing and even transportation. In other words, farmers could yield more crops, manufacturers could build goods at exponential rates and commuters could from one destination to another in nearly half the time. This not only increased productivity among manufacturers and business owners but it spawned a new wave of economic development in the United Kingdom as well as countries across the globe. This had a huge historical significance because it basically started what people today now know as capitalism. Business owners began trying to increase their output to beat the competition. And despite popular belief, the Industrial Revolution emerged entirely for economic reasons, not political. People began to see that they could produce goods at much faster rates than they were able to before. The Industrial Revolution undoubtedly is one of the major turning points in human history and it is an era that forever changed the world. In fact, historians call it a revolution because it basically destroyed the old manner of how things were done (Montagna). Initially, the main industries that underwent serious changes were agriculture, coal mining, textiles, and transportation. The introduction of steam power and the steam engine by James Watt was also introduced during the Industrial Revolution.
