This information is then applied to scanning and interpreting how poetic meter aids Shakespeares intent in his "Sonnet 18." There are specific methods for analyzing meter. To "scan" a poem is to determine its basic rhythm and to consider the significance of that rhythm to the meaning of the poem (Poetic Meter). In its use of rhythm, poetry has a great deal in common with music, as both exhibit mathematical foundations. Just as "meter" is a term referring to rhythm in music, likewise, it refers to rhythm in poetry. To begin scanning a poem, the lines should be read out loud while paying close attention to the syllables that are naturally stressed, that is pronounced with emphasis, and those that are unstressed (Poetic Meter). For example, consider the poem "Aunt Jenniferas Tigers" by Adrienne Rich (1951). In this example, stressed syllables are capitalized and unstressed are in lower case. This method for showing scansion is used because it will undoubtedly transmit accurately, while using symbols for these features probably would not transmit accurately, that is, line up over their corresponding syllables accurately. "Aunt JENnifeRAs TiGers PRANCe across THE screen,/Bright TOpaz DENizens OF a WORLD of GREEN" (lines 1-2). In these two lines, there are five stressed syllables per line and at least five unstressed. In each line there is one instance were there are two unstressed syllables preceding a stressed one, but other than that, the pattern is to have an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable (Poetic Meter).
