JP Morgan Chase is the result of a large number mergers and acquisitions, creating the large corporation. The history of Chase National Bank starts in 1877 when the bank was formed by John Thompson (1802 - 1891), It was John Thompson that founded the First National Bank 14 years earlier in 1863 (J P Morgan Chase, 2009). The name of the bank is interesting, as it was named after Salmon P Chase who was the Treasury Secretary and the Chief Justice of the US at the time, but Chase himself did not have any connection with the bank (J P Morgan Chase, 2009). The bank developed and grew initially through organic growth only, but in the 1920s the bank adopted an acquisitions strategy, using the subsidiary Chase Securities Corporation the bank acquired a number of smaller banks, and in 1930 a major acquisition takes place with the acquisition of the Equitable Trust Company of New York, this acquisition made Chase National Bank the largest bank in the US. The link with John D Rockefeller Jr was established through the acquisition of the Equitable Trust Company of New York, where Rockefeller was the major shareholder. The bank has been able to help with economic stimuli, as well as playing a role saving the Rockefeller center, helping General Electric with funding and a lease for the center which saved the project in 1930 the firm has supported a large umber of major companies.
