A 6 page paper comparing the health care systems of Iceland and the United States, where Icelandic medical students generally go to complete their residency requirements. Both systems are facing intense economic pressures, but Iceland’s national system does not prevent any citizen from gaining access to health care as is the case in the US. The health care system of Iceland holds a lesson from which the systems of all developed nations could benefit well. It would be desirable for those completing their residencies in the US to serve as ambassadors of a health care system that can have economic pressures and still be caring and committed to the ideals undergirding it. The paper also relates the mission of Saint Leo University to Iceland’s national health care system. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

unique in more ways than most places are unique unto themselves. Settled in the 9th century by Nordic explorers, the physical isolation of the country combined with the inhospitable
environmental conditions have influenced would-be immigrants to continue traveling elsewhere. The result is that Icelanders possess a "pedigree" unlike any other in the world (Johansson, Steinsson, Kristjansdottir, Grondal and
Riquelme 509). Their pure Nordic blood lines are of interest for both physical and cultural reasons (Andersen and Arnason 1565; Anderson 59; Ragnarsson 1354).
Icelands limited population and isolated location led to the creation of alliances with US-based health care institutions and universities. There is a dearth of clinical positions in
Iceland in which medical students can complete residency requirements. These new doctors generally gain their residency within the US, returning to Iceland to practice. Even though virtually all
Icelandic physicians have trained in the US, the structure of health care in the two countries is vastly different. Icelands Health Care System
Political ideology in Iceland is more attuned with the Nordic countries from which Icelands residents descended. Like those countries, Icelands health care system is a public one, paid for
primarily through government funding supported by tax receipts. Icelands national health care system "receives 85% of its funding from taxes, and provides universal care with minimal expense to the
patient" (Jonsson 941). The lack of clinical sites available for residency requirements for physicians sends newly-graduated medical students out of Iceland to the United States for the purpose of
