repel metals. Columbus utilized magnetism as a means by which to set his course based upon which way the needle pointed, Galileo first noticed that objects are pulled towards Earths center (Stern 148), while William Gilbert, physician to Queen Elizabeth I of England, asserted that "the Earth itself was a giant magnet" (Bruce Harvey PG) with its magnetic and geographic poles some distance apart. When one considers the magnitude of such an impact upon society, it is quite easy to understand the detrimental influence of a day without gravity and magnetism. One of the most important components in understanding gravity and magnetism is found within the scientific boundaries of Einsteins General Theory of Relativity, a premise that presumed to explain the physical elements of the universe. Initially, Einstein was certain the universe was comprised of a "static, uniform, isotropic distribution of matter" (Creation of a Cosmology); however, through his own observations he ultimately determined that just the opposite was in fact true: "an oscillating universe that had the potential for expansion or contraction" (Creation of a Cosmology). According to Hawkings opposing conjecture, the equations that defined the infinite density that comprised all universal matter during the Big Bang were said to "break down irretrievably" (A Brief History of Stephen Hawking), implying that mankinds conventional physics theories - similar to Einsteins general theory of relativity - "cant deal with the start of the universe" (A Brief History of Stephen Hawking). The manner by which this problem was solved was to combine the principles of two separate theories - quantum mechanics theory and Einsteins - in order to establish a single notion of how the universe began. However, Hawking contends that these two ...
