There are instances where some clear cut parallels can be drawn. One of these is the connection and influence that can be made between German expressionism and the horror film. We might even go so far to say that German Expressionism was fermenting in pre-war Germany, and may have even manifest itself in the horror known as WWII. History As in most periods of art there is seldom an abrupt break with ideas or styles, rather art boundaries are fluid in nature and often flow back and forth, until a given idea dwindles off, and another may start. An important inspiration for the German Expressionists was Norwegian painter, Edvard Munch (1863-1944). Munchs painting The Scream has been reproduced so often that it has almost become a clich?; yet this was not a singular painting. His emotionally charged images, expressing fear, isolation and anxiety, continue through most of his lifes work. "Illness, madness and death were the black angels that kept watch over my cradle," Munch said of his depressed youth. He also claimed that he "would not cast off my illness, for there is much in my art that I owe to it" (Strickland 123).
