AVOID ENTANGLING ALLIANCES WITH FOREIGN POWERS George Washington certainly was giving sound advice when he admonished the nation to avoid entangling alliances with foreign powers. This statement must have fallen upon deaf ears because the War of 1812 was exactly what he had warned against. The United States got into an extremely entangled alliance with Britain and her allies, and the War of 1812 was underway. To his credit, George Washington was indeed giving sound advice; it was very na?ve of him to believe, however, that this could be followed. While the United States would have liked nothing better than to be left alone and not get entangled in wars, the fact of the matter is that there is always another foreign power that wants to do something against our wishes or vice versa. Such was the case in the War of 1812. The student can elaborate here on the vestiges of the war and what caused these entanglements and why. The crux of this model paper is to point out that there is no way to avoid foreign entanglements and the War of 1812 is the most likely example, since it happened so quickly after George Washingtons famous Farewell Address.
