According to a recent research study approximately thirty-six percent of North Carolina schools need either "total replacement or extensive repair" (A Quiz on School Funding in North Carolina PG, 2002) with fifty-five percent of those needing total replacement of a roof, a foundation or both. This study advises that it would cost North Carolina approximately $7.5 billion to "meet rising enrollments, equip schools with modern technology, and fund teacher professional development" (A Quiz on School Funding in North Carolina PG, 2002). With surveys proving that students perform more poorly in school buildings that have deteriorated to some extent, it is obvious that these are very important figures to consider. When school bond elections are approved and schools are allocated money for building and improvement funds, it is up to the principal of these schools to disburse this money as he or she sees fit. This is no small task for someone who has the primary role of seeing to the administration of the entire school. The principal is also in charge of dealing with the teaching staff and other employees and approving the curriculum, maintaining the best possible environment for the students and myriad other duties that happen on a daily basis.
