Sunshine States educational community as of 1999 (Anonymous lottdist.html), the Florida lottery has well kept to its promise of supporting the states current and future academic growth. One can clearly see the advantage of having the lotterys influence upon Floridas academia by segmenting each dollar that is invested into the game of chance. Fifty cents of every dollar is mandated to be returned to the winning players; however, thirty-eight of the remaining fifty cents goes directly into the states Educational Enhancement Trust Fund for schools, colleges and other educational programs. The funds, which are supervised by the Florida legislature, are earmarked for distribution each spring to specific academic institutions. Advertising, suppliers, various expenses and the selling retailer comprise the remaining fourteen cents of each lottery dollar (Anonymous e1lott1.htm). Of the numerous programs into which the Florida State lottery invests, the Tutoring and Internship Programs have become two of the most successful. The Tutoring Program is maintained by a network of volunteers who tutor elementary and middle-school students who demonstrate the need for special assistance in the form of reading, writing, mathematics and spelling. Volunteers contend that this personalized attention "makes a world of difference in these kids ability to keep pace with the rest of the class, and helps prevent them from entering the dropout path" (Anonymous e1lott1.htm). At the same time, the Internship Program helps to acknowledge specific needs of those students preparing to enter the real world. This hands-on program anticipates potential job market concerns and effectively addresses them before the student is thrust out into the working environment.
