Feminism and the success of the feminist movement have enabled women not only to improve upon socio-political conditions that currently exist, but also to positively alter the past as well. Art and our conception of art history have certainly not escaped this massive transition. The book "Feminism & Art" consists of straightforward, informative surveys of the infrastructure of feminist art and how its proponents have influenced modern art history throughout the latter portion of this century. It begins with an analysis of the initial period of excitement over "womens lib" in the late 1960s and traces how and why women came together to further their own goals, as well as what happened to such efforts over time. Subsequent to this era came the largely impacting feminist art press, which consisted of a half dozen publications that endured for at least a few years. In one essay that I read, a New York University art professor wrote of her own growth as a feminist and art historian. The strength of that particular essay, as she herself truly noted, is that "nothing . . . is more interesting, more poignant, and more difficult to seize than the intersection of the self and history"1. With specific regard to a topic such as that of this essay, I found that the professors writing did not provide any account of how feminist-inspired scholarship expanded and ultimately helped to transform the practice of art history in the last twenty years. She also neglected to provide a systematic review of critical and theoretical approaches to feminist art, a surprising omission given the integral involvement of theory in the practice of feminist art since its earliest days.
