ago. Some of the most important changes occurred in the early years of the nations development, from the time of Washington to the time of Jackson. The following paper examines
the evolution of federal Indian policy during this period in history. Federal Indian Policy "From the late 1780s through the mid-1820s, it was generally accepted that Native Americans
took the lead in supervising the federal government" (Lewis, 2005). In the government such affairs were generally the responsibility of the War Department despite the fact that many of the
tribes were considered independent nations (Lewis, 2005). And nearly every tribe had their own agent of sorts who would approach the government officials with their desires, needs, as well as
complaints (Lewis, 2005). However, attitudes began to change and in the middle of the 1820s many states began to demand that they have more say in what happened to the
Natives of the land, many of them arguing for forcibly pushing Natives out of their particular state. "By the fall of 1827, Illinois Governor Ninian Edwards had also begun calling
on the Adams administration to remove the remaining Native Americans from Illinois" (Lewis, 2005). What made his position more powerful than most was reliant on the fact that many of
the tribes in Illinois had already signed treated which essentially given their land to the state. In light of this he pushed and requested that the government take action in
order to remove them from the state (Lewis, 2005). This was a condition or reality that was becoming very prevalent throughout many states. During the 1830s Jackson came into
