"The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993...is a United States labor law allowing an employee to take unpaid leave due to illness or to care for a
sick family member" (Wikipedia, 2006). In this particular law it is essentially understood that the family unit needs to be taken care of for the sake of the employee, the
employer and the society as a whole. As such it allows family members a 12 week leave of absence for taking care of a newborn infant, which can also include
birthing time. It allows for the same time frame in relationship to caring for a sick family member, or for dealing with adoption or foster parenting issues (Wikipedia, 2006).
After the individual has taken their 12 weeks they must be allowed their same position upon their return and they are still entitled
to benefits while they are on their absence of leave (Wikipedia, 2006). "Generally, the Act ensures that all workers are able to take extended leaves of absence from work to
handle family issues or illness without fear of being terminated from their jobs by their employers or being forced into a lower job upon their return." (Wikipedia, 2006). It does
not insure that the employee is paid during their leave and it really only applies to companies that employ 50 or more people, and that those people are within a
