Some have associated modernity with this world tragedy. In reality, however, modernity has little relation if any to the Holocaust. Rather than being attributable to some broad social
phenomena, the Holocaust is attributable to the demented mind of one man coupled with a long-ingrained hatred of a specific people. The Jewish Holocaust was not the result of
public apathy but rather of this mans ability to waft flame into the coals of intense hatred which had existed for generations.
There are, of course, numerous definitions for the concepts of modernity and postmodernity. There are also many societal implications to these concepts as well. The term
"modernity" is used in most cases in reference to the emergence of modern world religions, religions which had evolved in response to a dramatically changing environment (Dawson, 1998). Sociologists
have invested considerable energy in understanding the evolution of these religions and the impact of these changes on our culture as a whole (Dawson, 1998). Consequently they have devised
an extensive terminology to describe the changes which they observe. Postmodernism, as the term would suggest, is a subsequent stage to modernism but it is a term which encompasses
a considerably broader aspect of society than religion alone. Perhaps one of the most interesting and potentially devastating implications which has resulted in response to postmodernity is that of
