4) Among high school girls, drinking alcoholic beverages is common and some engage in heavy drinking. This leads to such problems as accidents, sexual violence, eating disorders and teen
pregnancy (Kilbourne). Researchers have found that more then twice as many college-age women were getting drunk in 1992 then were doing this in 1977, and that more women were
drinking to get drunk (Gleason, 1994). Alcoholism possess problems for both men and women,possible addiction, driving accidents and alcohol poisoning. However, there are risks that women face which appear to
be different from those of men (Gleason). These risks include depression and failure in relationships (1994). Men often leave alcoholic wives, where women usually stay with alcoholic husbands (1992).
Granted, this has to do with sexual roles as defined by Western society rather then with alcohol, but the effect is there nevertheless. Men have more freedom to leave such
a situation, both economically and psychologically (Kilbourne), and they do leave. Additionally, recent research has shown that women react to alcohol differently then do men and suffer greater
physiological consequences (Kilbourne, 1992). This research shows that women do not metabolize alcohol as efficiently as men. Likewise, male and female alcoholics do not metabolize alcohol as well as nonalcoholics.
Gastric metabolism is almost nonexistent for alcoholic women (Kilbourne, 1992; p. 4). Thus far, most research on alcoholism has focused on white men. While more research is certainly called
for on alcohols effects on all women, it is specifically needed for in regards to women of color as they are especially affected by alcohol-related problems (Kilbourne). Twice of many
