. On Black Thursday, or October 24, 1929, the stock market reportedly fell 34 points which was equivalent to a 9% (1998, p.1) drop for the day. A selling
panic ensued (1998). That was the start of a difficult period in U.S. economic history that would not be completely corrected until the start of the Second World War.
The thirties were rough. Gone were the roaring twenties, the worry about the effects of alcohol on the populous and attention to small matters, mundane matters was once again popular.
Roosevelt had a large problem on his hands. Stories are legendary as people lost their life savings, jumped off roofs to their demise or were practically starving. For this, there
had to be action on the part of the government and while some disagree with the programs that have come from this period, it is hard to dispute the quick
relief that it seemed to bring. New Deal policies included such things that are today known as Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Medicaid and Medicare. With these policies people were no
longer destitute if they were to lose their jobs. Legislation also sprang forth to help the people get their lives back and new rules and regulations were implemented in the
workplace. The New Deal went under the ideal of "action and action now" and the legislation was an amalgam of "alphabet" agencies such as AAA, NRA, WPA, SEC, FDIC,
and NLRB as well as work-relief projects that put those without jobs to work on building dams, bridges, airports and highways (Church, 1998). Many did not agree with
