Many times, speech is just a matter of development - children speak when theyre ready to, and as they get older, they decide to whom they want to speak and when. But there are times when certain disorders can interfere with normal speech, and cause problems and delays among the child. One such disorder is called elective mutism. This can be a frustrating disorder, because one is not sure if the child is not speaking simply because he or she doesnt want to speak, or because he or she simply cant at certain times. In this paper, well examine the phenomenon of mutism, determine potential causes and examine some treatments underway for trying to deal with this disorder. Definition The definition of mutism is fairly straightforward - its when someone doesnt talk, whether he or she is unable to speak or simply chooses not to at a certain time. Elective mutism is typically a childhood condition in which children dont speak because they dont want to (Leung and Kao, 1999). Those with elective mutism will speak when theyre on their own, sometimes with their friends and sometimes with their parents (Leung and Kao, 1999).
