Perhaps at one time, the specialist approach might have worked well - and still does in certain cases and fields of study. But overall, the generalist approach, which focuses more on breadth of subjects (in other words how much) rather than depth of one or two topics (how deeply the topic goes), is more effective in this day and age for a variety of reasons. First, given the diversity of society today, communication is different, information assimilation is different and people are different from one another (Casper, 1997). As a result, education needs to move from the function of simply instructing students on topics and moving on to teaching students how to think and how to assess life-long purposes (Casper, 1997). A narrow, specialized instruction method doesnt do a whole lot to teach a student about change, diversity or flexibility in todays world or society. Generalism also helps build on previous knowledge the student may have (Casper, 1997). Specialism, in the meantime, tends to mean that the student must start over from scratch in terms of learning something new. While ease of learning is not exactly the goal, the concept of generalist education helps students make a definite connection between what is learned the classroom and real life. Experts also point out that globalization and advances in technology are tending to lead toward the trend of the general approach to education as well (Trends and Prospects, 2001).
