In most of his plays, this one included, there seems to be one powerful individual who creates a great deal of the chaos and confusion, leading the characters to believe everything but the truth. In "Much Ado About Nothing" the primary trouble maker is Don John, and the primary victim of his plots is his half-brother Don Pedro. The following paper examines their relationship and examines their function in the play. Don Pedro and Don John Don Pedro is considered the handsome hero of this story in many ways. This is perhaps because he is young and he is a prince. His involvement predominantly surrounds the woman Hero who Claudio is in love with. Don Pedro agrees to woo Hero for him so that Claudio can ultimately marry her. Then we have the arrival of Don John, Don Pedros half-brother. He knows of this plot and is greatly disturbed by it as he has very bad feelings for Claudio. He therefore does everything in his power to make people believe lies, to undermine any relationships, and essentially tries to foil the plans of his brother and Claudio. Don Johns attempts at confusing people and misleading them is great successful throughout much of the story. His underhanded lies and involvement leads Claudio to believe that Hero is not faithful, and all but convinces everyone that she is dead as well. He then runs away leaving everything in chaos and utter confusion. However, as is often the case with Shakespeare plays, in the end all is resolved and they live happily, with Don John apparently being arrested and imprisoned.
