Rosalind Rosenbergs "Divided Lives: Women in the Twentieth Century" is a powerful expose on the complexity of factors which have kept women socially, politically, and economically subdued
throughout history. The title of Rosenbergs book is a recognition of the ever-growing chasm which is separating so many aspects of the lives of twentieth century women. Not
only are womens lives divided between their relationships with men in their world, between domestic and paid labor and numerous other components of modern life, they are divided between themselves.
Rosenbergs book is much more than just the rantings of one woman. Indeed, she examines the work of hundreds of other authors
who have taken womens plight to task. The work of these authors hails from both previous and present generations and encompasses autobiographical material, scholarly studies and statistics alike.
Rosenbergs review reveals a dramatic changes in gender roles, the societal expectations for women as opposed to for men, between the 1950s and the 1960s in particular.
Women of the 1950s occupied strictly defined hierarchies in comparison with men. They were expected to be the homemakers, the wives, the mothers,
the caregivers. Women were alternately placed on a pedestal and held in subservience. With the advent of the 1960s, that
decade which we often associate with a radical decline of societal mores and ethics, that decade we commonly describe as being rampant with sex, drugs, and rock and roll, womens
