country, and then begin to civilize it through contact. With that in mind the following paper first defines discovery and then applies that definition to Columbus and the discovery of America. Discovery Discovery is essentially the act of finding something, generally something no one has ever seen or noticed before. For example, a person could "discover" something buried in their backyard. A person could "discover" a new drug that cures cancer. There are many different types of discovery but for the most part it essentially means finding something no one else knew about, or knew. In the case of Christopher Columbus he was by no means the first person to see or truly "discover" America. For one thing, "What those books and teachings did not give credit to was the fact that Native Americans were already here first and truly discovered America" (Columbus Day, 2007). In all honesty Columbus was not the first to see or experience what is known as America today, and when one considers that he "discovered" an island in the Caribbean, where natives lived as well, the truth is that he was not the first person to discover the lands or see them. In fact, if one wants to be technical in relationship to European discovery Columbus was not the first European to discover America either as "Nordic explorers had travelled down the eastern cost of Canada thousands of years earlier" (Columbus Day, 2007). Now if someone wanted to take the perspective that discovery means that something changes, that some development takes place, some major alteration, following the discovery then it is clear that Columbus "discovery" was such a discovery.
