she had to be back on the job. Balancing her time between work and school wasnt easy, but it was a challenge she took seriously and one that she fully intended to meet. In the twenty years that she had been with the company she had managed to build an impressive record of punctuality and dependability, a record that she had no intention of jeopardizing now even though the opportunity to do so presented itself on a daily basis. The alarm on her wristwatch beeped just as she was finishing the lesson, and with a satisfied smile she turned her assignment in with a quick click of the mouse that sat just to the right of her "classroom". A second click closed the classroom itself, a third disconnected the modem, and a fourth brought up the companys current financial statement. She went back to work. Just a few short years ago, this scenario would have been more descriptive of an old Twilight Zone episode than a modern accounting office. The explosive growth that characterized the world of computer technology during the mid to late 1990s, however, coupled with the introduction of low cost, high speed Internet access, has made virtual reality virtually a reality. The dual office-classroom described above exemplifies one of the advantages that are offered by this new technology - computer-based training in the workplace. This type of education, also known as distance learning, offers both employers and employees an alternative to conventional methods of personnel training and retraining (Neeley, Niemi & Ehrhard 72).
