In general, eulogies usually come from the heart, but sometimes and particularly when dignitaries are involved, they are professionally written. They are sometimes cold, but often, they are warm and permeate the heart. A successful eulogy, at least according to some, should contain particular elements. According to notes submitted by a student, the purpose of a eulogy is to not only acknowledge the death of a human being, but also to transform living relationships and ease the mourners fears. Consolation, according to the notes, is that the soul lives on even after the body dies. Finally, eulogies help to bring the community together. Eulogies do also help to provide closure for community members and the family. They are provided in a context where people can say goodbye. However, when someone quite famous dies, it is difficult to find the right words. Sometimes, such as in the case of J.F.K., the whole country has to heal. Jamieson and Campbell argue that for some, it is important to immortalize the deceased and a subform of the eulogy is created (147). Congressional eulogies which were delivered for Robert Kennedy signify this exception and while political, the eulogist cannot go against the polices of the deceased (Jamieson and Campbell 148). Certain deaths prompt certain messages such as more research for a disease that killed the deceased or gun control when someone is killed by an assassins bullet (Jamieson and Campbell 148).
