Financial success, as well as success with people, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." At its most fundamental level, the book is about which behaviors are constructive and which arent. Carnegie presents the idea that by avoiding certain actions and attitudes, anybody can avoid irritating co-workers, customers, and people they deal with every day. Skills that Can be Learned One of the reasons for the great success of the book is that Carnegie assures the reader that here is a very real program that can be followed, steps to be taken that can allow a person to enjoy a greater level of self-assurance, attract friends and also assist in personal success in business. There are the critics who claim that it is only a salesmans skill of false intimacy that Carnegie promotes but, in reality, it more closely resembles the old adages taught by grandmothers and Sunday school teachers to treat others the way that we ourselves want to be treated. In other words, respect, kindness and awareness make all the difference in the world when it comes to how people relate to one another and their ability to love and be loved.
