The battle is not necessarily whehte or not marijuanas effects are dangerous, but rather its role as a gateway drug. Some suggest that it is more likely that a user of marijuana will go on to use other substances. This argument comes up whenever talk of legaliztion arises. In fact, there is a large movemnt today in respect to the legalization of the substnce that many deem to be harmless. But is it harmless? Why is marijuana so popoular and why do many people cliam it is not dangerous? There is evidence of the popularity of the drug and Brown (1994) claims it can be found in the "pro-pot" movement led by pop musicians who publicly discuss their marijuana use and sing about it too. Popular television shows have also shown that smoking marijuana is fun and relatively harmless and finally, the marijuana-leaf symbol is often displayed on caps, shirts, and other items aimed at the adolescent market (1994). Experts maintain that the permissive attitude toward pot is one of the reasons why there has been a sharp increase in its use (1994). Indeed, part of the reason why the drug is popuolar is becuae its destructive effects are not advertised. Some contend that there are many marijuana users who can smoke the drug without consequence, and further, the substnace has medicinal benefits. Scientists studying marijuana have concentrated on its positive aspects to help those with various illnesses such as strokes, cancer and AIDS ("NIH," 1998). It is well known that patients undergoing chemotherapy have found that marijuana lessens the unrelenting nausea associated with such treatments. ...
