Robin Williams film called "Dead Poets Society " he created the "Dead Sociologists Society" and displayed a slew of data on the Internet for sociologists like Comte, Martineau, Marx and Spencer as well as Durkheim, Simmel, Weber and Veblen, amongst others ("Dead" PG). While he displayed the theories of a great many classical sociologists, and the classical sociologists are all dead by the way, three of these men stand out. They are giants in the field and their names are Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. Contemporary sociology has taken over to an extent, although those who who align themselves with the Chicago school, and with classical sociology, are still not completely out of the game. There is still room for a variety of schools of thought in the field of sociology. In exploring the study of society, questions arise and one of those is why is it that Marx, Weber and Durkheim are referred to as "classical" social theorists? To answer that one must look at the authors in context. What are the alternatives? In other words, if they are not classical social theorists, what are they? It would be easy to say that they came first, that their theories are antiquated and so they are dubbed in the classical school, but of course, that would be too easy. There must be something about the work of these theorists that render them valuable today and so they become classic, or classical, as are things in other disciplines that are rendered valuable or authentic. Aro notes that compared with historical research, theories of classical sociology have more to do with ideas about social change from a philosophical perspective than with descriptive historical research (Aro PG). And the three theorists seem to fit right into the category. ...
