Arthurian story written by Chretien de Troyes (de Troyes, Episode 14). Yvain assumes this role in Episode 2 out of spite, when he is called a coward incapable of
carrying out his designs to their ends. But there is another element to Yvain, and that is his representation by de Troyes as the lion against the evil serpents.
It for this reason that "a valiant knight," "impelled by [the] need and hunger" of the battle, and who "makes his enemies yield . . . ought to be
loved and dearly prized" (14). As such, Yvain represents all warriors who have the strength of their "madness" to carry out good deeds in society. The reward for their
efforts is the love of many people, from lovers to friends to leaders, and in the process they learn to fight for the sake of others.
Yvain begins his journey by fighting a battle of revenge. The student researching this topic will find that he is spurred on that journey by claims
of shallowness and cowardliness. The shallowness of a person who brags of his own exploits, his accusers proclaim, is not virtuous. Therefore, in the name of avenging his
cousins name and his own name, Yvain in the name of virtue, mounts the crusade for his own soul. Chretien De
Troyes writes that "The moment such a man devotes himself to virtue, his story cannot be summed up or told, for no tongue could estimate the honourable deeds of such
