Rachlins book, as well as other sources, in order to address a problem with weight gain and lack of exercise that has developed over the course of the last two years. This problem has been acerbated by frequently eating out at fast food restaurants, as well as other restaurants. The first step in the proposed program will require the student researching this topic to examine his/her eating and exercise habits in more detail. Rachlin (2000) points out that addictive and/or habitual behaviors do not occur in a social vacuum. Behavior is intrinsically linked to perceived rewards and also to the social context in which rewards occur. For example, it is often the case that an individual "can gain entrance to an exciting social milieu in some instances only at the price of some degree of indulgence" (Rachlin, 2000, p. 129). This is particularly true in regards to the consumption of alcohol, but can also be true for eating as well. Does the student frequently join friends for meals at fast food restaurants? Is this a social outlet for the student? Rachlin (2000) comments that the ways in which a behavior is reinforced may be readily discernible to the individual and people may need to solicit the opinion of a friend or family member in order to make this identification. It has been noted frequently in empirical literature that there has been a marked increase in the problem of overweight and obesity in Western industrialized society over the last several decades. One of the principal dietary shifts that scholars believe contributes to this problem includes "greater consumption of food away from home," as well as large incr4eases in "total energy from salty snacks, soft drinks, and pizza" (Speakman, 2004, p. 209).
