In order to understand the concept of revivalism as applied to the
Catholic community in the USA, as described in Jay Dolans work Catholic Revivalism, it is useful to look at the history of Catholics in the USA and the way in
which the idea of revivalism can be applied to the way in which Catholicism developed in the country as a whole. In common with Jewish immigrants in the 18th and
19th century, Catholics were faced with problems regarding immigration and with adapting to the new and primarily Protestant cultural environment, as well as coping with the difficulties inherent in establishing
their ethnic identity; their success as a group is demonstrated by the fact that by the middle of the nineteenth century the Catholic community had grown significantly in size and
importance whilst the Jewish community remained a minority.
Dolans work is particularly concerned with looking at Catholic history from a standpoint which does rely solely on a narrow ecclesiastical perception; for example, Catholic Revivalism is
focused on the popular aspects of the development of Catholic religious culture in comparison to that of contemporary Protestantism. He looks, for instance, at the importance of the parish mission
in terms of its contribution to disseminating and maintaining the Catholic faith during the period studied, and the way in which this exemplified the growth and spread of Catholic religiosity.
