Considerable insight can be gained form studying Catholic canon law. One of the more interesting insights that can be gained, however, is of the mechanisms though which this law
has stayed static while at the same time changing considerably. Catholic canon law, after all, has a long history of development, a history stretching back some two thousand years
in fact. In some respects canon law has been fluid, changing slightly in order to reflect current times and issues. It could even be said that canon law
was too varied to be applied in all situations at all times of history in fact. On the other hand, however, canon law has been rigidly static. As McIntyre
(1996) observes no provisions for dissent are provided in the canons and thus: "questions like
the appointment of bishops, the role of the Roman curia, the law of celibacy, the place of divorced and remarrieds in the Church, and the ordination of married men become
non-issues" (McIntyre, 1996). That has been the case throughout the various revisions of the canons
that have occurred over time. This does not mean that it will stay the same, however. Catholics around the world have launched various efforts to change canon law
over time. Just last month, in fact, Canadian Roman Catholic priests and nuns met in Montreal to discuss ways to change canon law to allow such currently forbidden practices
