business Smiths Accounting and Tax Service had means Amanda hasnt been a very good manager. Because of her assumptions that all the CPAs should know what theyre doing (and that
all anyone needs to do is to remember the mission statement of the company), huge mistakes were made. As a result, Amanda finds herself having to clean up a lot
of messes rather than going out and cultivating new business. Can her company survive?
It can - but Amanda needs to stop taking a hands-off attitude toward her business. Shes not an employee but rather, is a manager. But what, exactly, does a manager
do? Well, she does a lot more than hire people, give them directions and send them out to do their jobs. The four functions of management, in fact, involve planning,
organizing, leading and controlling (Four Functions of Management, 2011). Its safe to say that Amanda was somewhat lukewarm on the planning stages and not at all present on the other
three functions of management. Without taking those four functions seriously, a business success is uncertain (Selley, 2009). This is something Amanda has found out.
But isnt delegating and telling others what to do a part of management? To an extent - but leading a team involves more than simply telling that team what
