Property bias keeps our corporate worldview rooted in the pre-democratic age. Moreover, it arises from the unconscious belief that property owners or the wealth holders matter more than do others, and this has become tantamount to a kind of economic aristocracy. Is the term "business ethics" merely an oxymoron much like "military intelligence" or "honest attorney"? This essay examines some of the issues germane to the necessity/ morality of income inequality between societies, and its relevance to corporate responsibility. The process of moral decision making in which profit is given legitimate consideration is covered under the realm of business ethics. Practice management gurus have developed a variety of business rationalization techniques based on ethical assumptions. Inherent in these is what is termed the Social Contract Theory. This theory governs societal behavior/ business practices, and cites morality as consisting in the set of rules mandating how people are to treat one another. It dictates that rational people within the constructs of their societies will agree to accept these rules -- for their mutual benefit -- on the condition that others follow those rules as well. However, what happens when gross injustices occur germane to income inequities and what is a corporations social obligation? Among the reasons often given for increasing income inequality is the decline of unionization. This is cited because union workers historically have made higher wages than nonunion workers. In a recent study, economist David Card estimated that de-unionization had reduced the incomes of those in "the lowest 20% households by 4.3%." ...
