45. The results were published in a landmark 1978 text entitled The Seasons of a Mans Life. Departing from such influential psychologists as Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson, whose theories tended to focus upon the importance of childhood and adolescence to adult development, Levinson and his colleagues instead concentrated on the developmental process that occurred after the age of 20. The major thesis of this work is that for a man to live a meaningful and satisfying life, he must approach life as one does the changing of seasons. Although they tend to overlap, each season is defined by its own unique set of characteristics. So too is life, but as this study reveals, knowing how man develops can offer insightful tools that will lead to the attainment of personal and professional goals. Using the research of famous theorists including Freud, Erikson, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler among others, the authors thesis is developed through a discussion of various points that include concepts of life structure, life course, and life cycle, with the importance of dreams and the relationship between mentor and prot?g? are discussed in detail. According to Dr. Levinson (1978), the life structure refers to "the underlying pattern of design of a persons life at a given time" (p. 41). This pattern evolves through a sequence of events, which Levinson interprets as an extension of Eriksons life course concept. A life course involves the sequencing of events, relationships, successes, and failures that collectively define an individuals life (Levinson, 1978).
