sonatas. The creation of Beethovens piano sonatas were spread, more or less, evenly over the course of his creative life (Matthew, 1967). As such, they epitomize an immense journey, summarizing the events of Beethovens life both musically and spiritually (Matthews, 1967). The piano occupied a central position in Beethovens art. His thirty-two sonatas are intrinsic part of the Beethoven canon, in regards to the amateur pianist or the professional (Machlis, 1970). This is why they are referred to as the "pianists New Testament" (Machlis, 1970). Beethovens sonatas are characterized by dynamic "contrasts, explosive accents, opposition of low and high register, syncopation and powerful crescendos" (Machlis, 1970, p. 222). Also intrinsic to Beethovens piano music was his fondness for theme and variations (Machlis, 1970). In both instances, an examination of example works demonstrates Beethoven as a "master builder, marshaling his inexhaustible wealth of ideas to fashion out of the simplest material a towering edifice" (Machlis, 1970, p. 222). The compositions selected for study all have the home key of C minor in common. Therefore, exploring the nature of these compositions also reveals the associations that Beethoven had with this particular key. Opus 10, No. 1 -- Sonata in C Minor Allegro molto e con brio Three sonatas make up Opus 10 and mark a move by Beethoven toward new musical territory (Lockwood, 2003). These strongly contrasting sonatas are in C minor, F major and D major and were originally published in September of 1798. They are dedicated to a female patron, Countess Anna Margarete von Browne, Wife of Browne-Camus (Lockwood, 2003).
