George Batailles much cited Erotism : Death and Sensuality is a unique and controversial work that draws on some of those questions that oft do not linger in the minds of individuals. His book is not merely meant to explore human sexuality, but rather to link erotism with spirituality. The title that includes both erotism and death in the same breath is rather disturbing and hints at violence. But death can be peaceful too and in fact, the violence that he speaks of is more relevant to the sexual experience than the experience of death. In a general sense, people have pushed the limits of sex and drugs, some experiencing the typical high, while others have found something more--a dark room at the end of the tunnel some equate with a passageway to the next life--because they have pushed things to the extreme. There is a thin line between experimentation to produce a desired effect and reaching a higher spiritual plane. One can go about sex for example by rote, and an outside observer cannot tell the difference, but Batailles argument deserves contemplation. In trying to reach human limits in eroticism, one can go too far. An important question is ultimately, how can one push those limits and not do damage to themselves? Bataille claims that sexuality with shame may be equated with erotism. Certainly, the author is right in that a clandestine affair is much more passionate than one where intimacy is expected.
