1723, Bach wrote two cycles of teaching pieces for his won, Wilhelm Friedemann (Smith, 1996). Each of these cycles contains fifteen pieces. The first cycles, which is for two voices, Bach termed "Inventionen" and works BWV 772-786 encompass this cycle. The second cycle, which has three voices, Bach termed "Sinfonien," and this refers to works BWV 787-801; however, today, these are know simply as Two- and Three-Part Inventions (Smith, 1996). As this suggests, Bachs inventions are designed to be teaching pieces, rather than performance works. On the title page of "Inventionen," Bach wrote, "in which lovers of keyboard music are shown a clear way to learn to play cleanly in two parts" (Smith, 1996). In other words, Bachs purpose was primarily to develop, in his words, a "cantabile style in playing" (Smith, 1996). As a form of music, Smith (1996) asserts that a Bach-style Invention is relatively unimportant as this form as only been employed by a handful of musicians either preceding or following Bach. However, as a process, "that is to say as models of inventiveness," that is how to formulate new themes and develop them in "clever and ingenious ways," Bachs Two- and Three-Part Invention are elegant examples of this feature and every composer since Bach has derived inspiration and instruction from them (Smith, 1996). According to Smith, the most significant feature of one of Bachs Inventions is the manner in which a motive is "varied, counterpointed, and re-textured" in order to create a complete work (1996). It is easy to see that the main "teaching" point in Invention 11 is to build up the dexterity of the pianists finger and to practice long, fast runs.
