challenges still lies within the confines of our own minds. In the world of man are a wide variety of mental and behavioral disorders which affect the daily functioning of millions. Depression is considered a mood disorder, but that doesnt mean there are no physical correlates. In fact, recent studies of people with depression have found imbalances of certain chemicals in their brains. Anti-depressant medications act on chemical pathways in the brain that are related to mood. Most experts agree that clinical depression is a depression that does not go away with accompanying feelings of worthlessness and despair. There are some sub-classifications which include: unipolar disorder, biopolar, and dysthymia(Deren 2004). An example of someone who is unipolar would be a person who has recurring bouts of severe depression that lasts for as little as a few hours to months on end. Loss of motivation, sleeplessness, and hopelessness are characteristic. Like clinical depression, anxiety disorders see the sufferer struggling with an ongoing feeling of worry and anxiety. People who suffer from anxiety disorders seem to always be anticipating a major disaster, worrying excessively about anything from health to money to family. Some can be so debilitated by this disorder that they not able to function, maintaining normal day-to-day activities. Additionally, both disorders can be hereditary, but environment can also play a factor. Both disorders are affective disorders of the brain, but in different locales. Attention deficit disorder affects millions of children and young adults throughout the world. Generally speaking this disorder is treated with a combination of medication and behavioral conditioning.
