One issue that has been a prevalent factor among our nations youth is separation from a parent through the act of divorce. Children and youth are greatly impacted in all areas of life when their parents separate and/or divorce: psychologically, emotionally and often physically. There has been and continues to be a growing debate and controversy regarding the effects of divorce on a childs or adolescents mental state and their ability to develop positive and solid relationships in their future lives. As one studies the elements of the debate, one psychological theory must be included for consideration: the theory of attachment. This writer proposes that this theory must be investigated in terms of relationship between attachment and divorce of parents and the childs present and future ability to function as a positive and constructive person in the society. This essay suggests the that school counselor must have a through grasp of these factors in order to help the children he or she is charged with helping.
