brought down by an inherent character flaw. This paper discusses one of the striking things about Othello, namely, why does he believe Iago so easily? The answer lies in his insecurities. Discussion Iago is a difficult character to understand because his revenge is so vicious and yet seems to have no basis in reality. He was passed over for promotion and maybe at some point his wife slept with Othello, a claim he obviously doesnt believe himself. So why does he deliberate set out to destroy his superior officer? Maybe hes insane; maybe its simply racism; maybe, as Kenneth Branaghs characterization suggests, hes in love with Othello and wants to ruin him for choosing Desdemona instead of himself; the debate about his motivation rages on with no satisfactory conclusion. But of even greater importance is the question that literally jumps off the page: why does Othello listen to him? And why does he believe the lies that Iago tells, which any thinking person should see immediately are untruths? The only plausible answer for his gullibility is that he is so unsure of himself that such negativity makes sense to him. Possibly the most important thing to him is that hes a black man in a white world. Not only that, but hes married a white woman, and although she loves him very much, he is easily driven to jealousy by his fundamental inability to believe in that love. And yet, she has defied all of society, alienated her father and risked her reputation to marry him. Still, thats not enough.
