illegality in the legislative whole of the country, there is an ever-worsening problem with overcrowding of prisons. Housing an increasing number of prisoners for an increasing number of crimes has
resulted in crises where states have to construct new prisons or seek other lower cost solutions to the problem. One of the most effective solutions to be implemented is alternative
sentencing. In alternative sentencing scenarios, judges can impose sentences that are punitive in nature without necessarily sending a convicted individual to jail or prison and consuming state resources. One of
the most popular forms of alternative sentencing is probation. This paper will explore the topic of probation in some depth and make a case for its demonstrative success. This paragraph
helps the student introduce the concept of probation. When an individual is placed upon probation, the understanding is that he or she is being granted something of a reprieve from
the state wherein the full punishment associated with their convicted crime is not being carried out, in exchange for the individual meeting certain conditions. For instance, an individual on probation
may have to regularly meet with a probation officer, maintain employment, submit to randomized drug testing, or any number of other conditions referred to as the terms of probation. If
these terms are not met, then the individual is typically re-sentenced to jail or prison. Therefore, probation offers a way in which to reduce the strain on jails and prisons
