Films like AI, and others that utilize the concept of artificial intelligence and the capability of robots to have feelings, have surfaced. Human beings wonder why if machines can think, that they cannot have a heart too. There are many issues that crop up in this realm. While many realize that things made of metal--with the exception of the Wizard of Ozs tin man perhaps--can never truly feel anything, the idea that AI can have a life of its own boggles the mind. In a 1998 episode of the X-Files, a man named Donald Gelman is considered to be a computer technology expert who had been missing for some time. Several rival gangs are after his computer. Mulder somehow gains possession of Gelmans computer only to find clues which lead them to a woman who is about to be killed. Why would government agents want to kill her? As it turns out, this woman along with her cohorts had been developing artificial intelligence with the promise that people can be alive forever. This episode is a good case study when evaluating artificial intelligence. Two deceased characters are purportedly alive in the form of mere "intelligence." Their bodies were physically dead, but they were supposedly alive in cyberspace. This brings up many important questions. If one could upload his or her mind, is that enough to say that a person exists, or is the human body necessary? In a general sense, it does appear that a disembodied spirit could be a person because a brain-dead individual is not considered to be a viable person. They are better off dead.
