and the growing seriousness of those crimes, demands an alternative approach to juvenile criminal justice. It is imperative, in fact, that we begin to sentence those juveniles who commit the most horrendous crimes as adults. Juveniles account for a tremendous percentage, if not the majority, of violent crimes committed in this country (Humes, 1998). The incidents of multiple school shootings which have broken out across the nation coupled with the number of one on one crimes of juvenile to juvenile or juvenile to adult, in particular, have both shocked and revolted us. There have been many more situations, however, where juveniles commit very serious crimes. As a consequence there has been a growing tendency within our criminal justice system to try juveniles who commit such atrocities as adults. While many object to such sentencing, I contend that it is one of the most ready solutions we have available to effectively address the problem. Next to car accidents gunshot wounds are the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of fifteen to twenty-four (Lovett, 1997). According to the National Center for Health Statistics, murder by firearms is the number one cause of death among black males between the ages of fifteen and thirty-four (Lovett, 1997). The issue of juvenile crime and the measures which must be taken to alleviate that crime, however, are ones which obey no racial or geographic lines. Most often juveniles target other juveniles in their criminal rages. As a consequence of this relationship, our schools have become a particularly critical element in the juvenile crime problem.
