discusses the argument that at times it is necessary to use animals in scientific research for health reasons. It argues that animal cruelty of any kind is never justified. Discussion Deliberate cruelty to animals is very difficult to understand; it seems that the only possible answer is that the human is sick. Animals, especially domestic animals, are completely dependent on their human companions for food, shelter and love, and when those things are withheld, the animal suffers. When deliberate cruelty is added to the neglect, the situation becomes horrific. Morally, deliberate cruelty to animals is found repugnant by a majority of humans, such that it has been suggested that it "should be drawn into the realm of criminological inquiry as it has importance on multiple levels" (Vollum, Buffington-Vollum and Longmire 209). These important factors include the fact that cruelty to animals "may signify other actual or potential interpersonal violence"; that most forms of animal cruelty are illegal; that animal cruelty is "part of the utilitarian calculus on the minimization of pain and suffering"; that cruelty to animals is a "violation of rights" and that violence against animals is one of many types of violence that go to make up our increasingly violent society (Vollum, Buffington-Vollum and Longmire 209). It has been argued that animals, in their own right, are worthy of consideration and that "humans have a rational interest in the study and alleviation of animal abuse due to its interrelationship with violence perpetrated against humans" (Vollum, Buffington-Vollum and Longmire 209). That is, cruelty to animals may be a signal that the perpetrator is "working up" to violence against humans.
