For the most part there is a breed of dog called the wild dog that resides in Africa and then, like any other country in the world, there are dogs that are domesticated, with some breeds specific to Africa. With all of this in mind the following paper examines African dogs of both types; domestic and wild. African Dogs It seems that a good place to start, in terms of looking at African dogs, is in a book that talks about African dogs. One such book is Dogs of Africa: History and Description of African Breeds by Sian Hall. In this book the author addresses many different types of dogs that come from Africa and in the first chapter she examines a particular dog that is often wild, though in some parts it is domesticated to some extent. The dog is called the Pariah, or the Drummer: "These little drummers are street urchins who live on the fringes of human society. For thousands of years they have moved silently on the edges of campfires, their shadows thrown huge and fantastic on the black wall of vegetation at the edges of settlements. They are the guttersnipes who knock over rattling cans in the dead of night in dripping and deserted city streets. They live without mans protection, without his love, squabbling over scraps or some filthy morsel thrown from a toppled garbage bin" (Hall). There is perhaps a great deal of debate and curiosity about this dog for it is found throughout much of the world and many are uncertain if they are remnants of domesticated dogs or simply something in themselves.
