But while this capacity for learning remains constant, studies show that there are distinct differences in the manner in which different demographic categories of people learn. For example, the learning experience for adults differs in many respects from that experienced by adolescents. Studies demonstrate that it is important for educators to comprehend the role that these differences play in the learning process. Research has shown that there is a positive correlation between learning orientation and increasing age among college students. In a study conducted by Burley, Turner and Vitulli (1999), the data indicated that as students age, they become more aware of the usefulness of knowledge and are less concerned about external evaluation. This data points toward one of the basic differences between adult and adolescent learners. Adults are generally much more goal-oriented than younger students. Adolescents often simply strife for making a good grade, while adults are interested in actually acquiring more long-term knowledge. As this suggests, the goals of adult learners are typically more synonymous with the goals of educators than are younger students. Therefore, Burley, Turner and Vitlli (1999) posit that younger students are institutions of higher learning can benefit from observing the learning-oriented behaviors of older students (i.e., adult students). Classroom activities that pair younger students with older students may "encourage the development of adaptive academic behaviors in college students" (Burley, Tuner, and Vitulli, 1999, p.84).
