When anxiety has been determined to be a part of other ongoing psychiatric disorders, therapy which involves medical intervention may be warranted. Most of these drugs are called anxiolytics. Most anxiolytics are proscribed for generalized anxiety and the type of anxiolytics used do not really make a difference. "Nine benzodiazepines are recommended for treatment of anxiety. They are chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, oxazepam, clorazepate, lorazepam, prazepam, alprazolam, halazepam and clonazepam"(Massari 2003). These types of anxiolytics have various uses among them. For example, some of these drugs, in addition to the anti-anxiety effect, also are effective sedatives and hypnotic drugs as well. In constructing your paper, you would also want to mention that these drugs have anti-convulsive properties(Massari 2003). Dr. Massari reports that certain anxiolytics are chosen because of their reaction time and the quick elimination from the body, such as oxazepam or Lorazepam. Panic disorders seem to respond better, Dr. Massari states, to alprazolam, clonazepam, and lorazepam. Some physicians have worried about the longer-term effects of these drugs, such as addiction and withdrawal symptoms, most of the current data suggests otherwise. The metabolic half-life of these drugs tend to cycle out of the body slower and more gradually and in the end, the withdrawal symptoms are lessened. Like clinical depression, anxiety disorders see the sufferer struggling with an ongoing feeling of worry and anxiety.
