This paper will attempt to portray, not only the devastating effects of the condition, but will contrast and compare ethnic boundaries to determine if African American women have a different
body image of themselves than Caucasian women, and if so, to what extent do black females compare their bodies to images seen on television, and are those images the same
types that Caucasian women emulate. METHOD Doris Abood, an associate professor of health education at Florida State University, examined eating disorders in both black and white women and
found that in three studies, between 1996 and 1998, that black women did not suffer from eating disorders to the extent that white women did because of the cultural acceptance
of larger women in the black community(Holness, 2002). Interestingly enough, though there are not a great deal of research on the ethnicity of a person in regard to anorexia,
the research that does exist states that a persons view of themselves is definitely related to his or her risk of developing an eating disorder(Pumariega, 1986, see also Crago, Shisslak,
& Estes; 1996). Also, it was found that ethnically diverse individuals who do end up with eating disorders do so because they have internalized typically white middle-class value systems(Crago,
et all, 1996). Acculturation measures have been found to positively correlate with scores on the eating attitudes test, an instrument designed to measure eating disorder symptomatology(Pumariega, 1986). Therefore, one
